For his role in the protests, Ammar was rusticated on 4 November 2022, and the university proctor had been pressuring him to vacate the hostel. Already receiving psychiatric treatment, he is reported to have taken an overdose of medicines on 22 November, and suffered a cardiac arrest on the early morning of 23 November.
The SAU administration changed his rustication to suspension, and also agreed to bear the cost of treatment. But the university has since gone back on its word, with the excuse that the insurance company has described Ammar as a drug abuser, terming his condition "self-inflicted".
Meanwhile, Ammar struggles to remain alive at the Primus Hospital in Chanakyapuri.
