In a major blow to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Pervez Khattak has announced to step down as party's chief of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter.

The development came hours after the former KP CM and another PTI leader Asad Qaiser went 'missing', and were reported to be at a safe house.

Announcing his decision in a video statement on Thursday, the veteran politician said that he reached his decision after "consulting friends".

Brushing aside the 'propaganda' on electronic media, former PTI stalwart said he made his decision after a careful consideration of the situation.

Khattak also said that he would decide the future course of action after consulting his "friends and party workers" further.
An exodus from the PTI followed, as leaders from the top tier announced to part ways with Imran Khan and his organisation. According to them, they can’t remain a part of a party that targets the army and compromises national interests.

Prior to the presser, PTI chairman Imran Khan had alleged that the duo had been "called in for a meeting by intelligence agencies and then illegally detained in a safe house [to pressure them to quit the party in return for their release".

Adil Shahzeb had said during the programme Khabar Say Aagay that if Tareen formed a political party, Khattak will be joining the ranks, and if he quits PTI, he will take some two dozen workers of the party with him.

Defections in the former ruling party began in the wake of the May 9 unrest, that involved the targeting of security and government installations.
