Dawn quoted FIA Director General Dr Sanaullah Abbasi as saying that 50 individuals suspected of sharing extremist content online have been arrested and several hateful hashtags on social media have ended after the action.
He added that this action against extremism on online platforms by the FIA will help bring foreign investment and economic stability as well as credibility in the system.
Earlier on Thursday, the FIA launched an operation against the banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP)’s social media accounts.
The body claimed to have arrested two people during the operation in Lahore, Faisalabad, Nankana Sahab, Islamabad, and other cities of Punjab.
The statement issued last week said that those arrested uploaded hateful content and doctored photos on the internet through the banned outfit’s social media handles.
The arrested individuals were identified as Shahzeb Nazeer, Naeem, Ayub, Muhammad Hussain, Muhammad Hassan, Ghulam Shabbir, and Hamza Sheikh.
The crackdown was launched amid media reports suggesting that Minister for Interior Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad had asked the authorities concerned to initiate a crackdown on the social media accounts of the extremist group.
