The Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered the government to declare a citywide emergency, blaming the current government for the smog-related conditions in Lahore.
When the LHC heard appeals for the court to become involved in the case, the orders were issued.
Lahore Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhwa, along with other authorities, appeared before the court during today's hearing.
The government was ordered by the court to refrain from unsealing the industries that produce black smoke, and school and college students were instructed to notify the authorities about these factories.
Additionally, it ordered that the commissioner and other authorities visit universities and schools to update students on the ruling involving industries that release black smoke.
Judge Shahid Karim noted, "The current state of smog is the government's fault." The court addressed the police and instructed them to consider the state of the city, remembering that they were the owners and so could take action.
Judge Karim noted that the fog had previously begun to impact the city around October, rather than at the end of November or December. He said that the fog was not just a concern for him personally but also for children when he issued the decision to declare an emergency.
The court then adjourned the hearing till November 3.
