Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif has said that the Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Khalid Javed Khan request for reports regarding Nawaz Sharif's medical condition was driven by 'political motivation' and had been issued to fuel a 'media trial.'

The office of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) leader addressed a letter to the AGP's secretary stating that the request was made to further the 'dying political rhetoric' of the incumbent government and could amount to 'contempt of court.'

The AGP's office had warned Shahbaz earlier this month that if he did not provide a report regarding his elder brother and statesman's medical condition, Shahbaz could himself face contempt of court proceedings.

Yesterday, the Lahore High Court (LHC) received an updated report on former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's health, which suggested that Sharif was not healthy enough to return to Pakistan. The report recommended Nawaz Sharif remain in London pending further treatment for his heart, citing his ‘fragile cardiac condition’ and ongoing need for extensive medical care.

Nawaz Sharif has been in London since November 2019, when the LHC granted him permission to go to the UK for medical treatment despite his prison term.

At the time, Shabaz had submitted an oath to court stating that, "I do hereby undertake to ensure return of my brother Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, within four (4) weeks or as and when certified by doctors that he has regained his health and is fit to return to Pakistan. I further undertake to provide/send the periodical medical reports of the doctor."
