The Islamabad High Court has approved a post-arrest bail for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senator Azam Swati, in detention since November over his controversial tweets on senior army officers.

The senator had filed the plea via his lawyer Babar Awan in IHC after a special court of the federal capital rejected his application on the grounds that he had committed the same offence twice.

During the hearing, IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq barred FIA from arresting him, and approved his bail against the surety bonds amounting to Rs200,000.

The senator was taken into custody on Nov 27 after he was booked for a “highly obnoxious campaign of intimidating tweets against state institutions.”

On Dec 9, Sindh Police took Swati into custody from Quetta, despite the Balochistan High Court having ordered his release and quashing of all five FIRs against him in the province. The BHC had also ordered law enforcement, including the FIA, to not file any more cases against Swati.
