Two suspects were held following the brutal rape and murder of a six-year-old girl in Karachi's Bin Qasim neighbourhood, on Thursday.

The hours-long protest against the incident was called off after a senior police official assured protesters about the arrests of the remaining suspects.

The girl had gone missing a few days ago after stepping outside of her house in the Data Nagar area. A police officer revealed to the media that the one of the suspects belonged to Layyah.

The other suspect, he maintained, had assisted his accomplice in throwing the girl's body into a drain.

The officer said that the prime suspect lured the girl with toys, before subjecting her to sexual assault and strangling her to death.

Last month, an elderly man in Gharo sexually assaulted a 23-year-old mentally-challenged woman. He later confessed to his crime.

The woman, identified as H*, was assaulted within the limits of the Gharo police station. Police said Raza Khaskheli, a 65-year-old man, was arrested after an FIR was lodged by the victim’s father under Section 376 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The accused, police maintained, lived near the house of the victim, and had been suffering from a mental disorder since her childhood and couldn't speak. She was alone when the incident took place.

Police also quoted the suspect as accusing the woman of ‘luring him’ to commit the vile act, and that he ‘couldn’t control himself despite his efforts.’

Earlier that month, a woman was raped at gunpoint at Islamabad’s F-9 Park, sending shockwaves nationwide.

According to the victim M*, she was at the park with a male colleague when two armed men intercepted them.

They took them to the nearby trees and separated both, before subjecting the woman to the heinous act. The victim was also tortured during her ordeal.
