The Election Commission of Pakistan on Thursday announced February 11, 2024, as the date for general elections in the country.
The date was given during a hearing of the elections case in the Supreme Court. As Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa heard the case of holding elections within the constitutionally stipulated time of 90 days, the Election Commission of Pakistan's (ECP) Counsel Sajeel Swati told the court that the commission was on track to complete the process of delimitations by November 30 and that they would be holding polls on February 11.
At this, CJP Isa asked whether President Dr Arif Alvi was on board with the date and whether the President had been consulted over the date.
Subsequently, the CJP directed the ECP to consult President Alvi on the date.
Previously, the ECP did not announce a date for elections, but when announcing a schedule for delimitations, it had indicated that elections would be held within 54 days of completing the delimitation exercise. After it scaled back the period to complete delimitations from December 15 originally to November 30 after receiving feedback from political parties and other stakeholders, it put the tentative date as the "last week of January".
