"The president of Pakistan, Dr Arif Alvi, has approved the advice of the prime minister of Pakistan to dissolve the National Assembly under the Article 58 (1) read with Article 48(1) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan," read a statement from the President's Secretariat.
Prime Minister Imran Khan addressed the nation on Sunday, recommending the dissolution of the National Assembly. He congratulated the people of Pakistan for the blocking of the no-confidence motion, terming it an "attempt of changing the regime [and] the foreign conspiracy".
The prime minister also called for elections, telling the nation to "Prepare for elections. No corrupt forces will decide what the future of the country will be. When the assemblies will be dissolved, the procedure for the next elections and the caretaker government will begin."
Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry reported that the federal cabinet had also been dissolved, although the prime minister will remain in office.
