Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf President Parvez Elahi was re-arrested on Saturday, moments after his acquittal by a Gujranwala court in two corruption cases.

Elahi was taken into custody right after the court's verdict in the cases pertaining to embezzlement.

According to Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) spokesperson Abdul Wahid, the former Punjab CM was arrested over illegal appointments in Punjab Assembly.

He said that the arrest was made as per the law, adding that the technical point raised in the court ruling, questioning the method, was contrary to facts.

Wahid added that the ACE would challenge the verdict, which he said had overlooked crucial legal aspects.

He further said that there was solid evidence of Elahi's involvement in corruption, and hoped the court would nullify the decisions in both the cases.

Arrest on June 1

The senior politician was arrested two days ago (June 1) in Lahore in wake of the May 9 violent riots, after several botched attempts to take him into custody.

He was detained from near his residence in Lahore by the provincial anti-corruption authority.

Elahi was in his vehicle when he was intercepted by police, and taken away by anti-corruption officials in another car.

A heavy contingent of police had been surrounding the PTI leader's residence for several days, without results.

The same day, an anti-corruption court dismissed his plea for an interim bail as he failed to appear for a hearing.

Detentions

Last month, police conducted raids at his residences in Lahore and Gujrat. Twelve people, largely PML-Q workers, were taken into custody on the occasion by the anti-corruption and police authorities, who had used an armored truck to smash open the gates of one of his residences.

While the authorities had been attempting to make the arrest over the corruption charges, their action has intensified in a bid to nab PTI leaders and workers for their role in the unrest earlier this month.

Riots broke out in multiple cities as PTI workers engaged in scuffles with law enforcers after Imran Khan’s arrest from the Islamabad High Court premises last month.

The party had called for protests shortly after the arrest, with people taking to the streets and blocking the thoroughfares.
