On the eve of Kashmir Solidarity Day, the Senate has passed a resolution condemning India's abrogation of the special constitutional status of Jammu and Kashmir during a symbolic session chaired by Krishna Kumari, who is a Hindu Senator from Thar.

The senator, who hails from a Hindu community in Thar, chaired the session during a difficult week for religious minorities in Pakistan.  On Sunday, a priest in Peshawar was murdered in broad daylight on his way home from Mass.  In a separate incident, a Hindu trader was shot dead by assailants, despite his previous pleas for help from the police .

Celebrating the session, Senator Kumari remarked that it was a 'great honour' to chair the Senate.  She thanked Pakistan People's Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari for giving her the opportunity.

Chairman Bhutto-Zardari remarked that her chairing the session represented a Pakistan of "unshakable patriotism, equality and pluralism." Senator Kumari was elected in 2018 on a reserve seat on a PPP ticket.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senator Faisal Javed Khan noted the event sent a "strong message" that Pakistan supported its minority communities.

Media personality Shama Junejo added that that this was the image Pakistan should share with the world, remarking "more power to Krishna Kumari Kohli and all the senators with her."

As reported in Dawn, the senate's resolution, which was passed unanimously, expressed solidarity with the people of Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and reiterated Pakistan's support for their "struggle for their inalienable right to self-determination every step of the way."

The resolution called for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be held accountable for India's reported crimes against humanity, and rejected the illegal actions of India on August 5, 2019, calling it a "gross violation of all United Nations resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir."
