Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is going to become the Star Wars franchise's first female director.
The 45-year-old Pakistani-Canadian director is also the first woman of color to shoot the sci-fi installation's next part, Star Wars: New Jedi Order.
Sharmeen told CNN on New Year's Eve, "I'm very excited about the project because I feel what we're about to create is something very special." Filming is set to begin this year.
She further said, "We're in 2024 now, and it's about time that we had a woman come forward to shape a story in a galaxy far, far away."
The Academy Award winner also disclosed that the script was created by Peaky Blinders writer Steven Knight and that Daisy Ridley will reprise her role as Rey.
Sharmeen is well-known in the film industry for her Oscar-winning documentary Saving Face and for directing two episodes of the Ms Marvel series.
Throughout her career, she has received seven Emmy Awards, two Academy Awards, a Knight International Journalism Award, and other honors.
