President Dr Arif Alvi on Monday raised legal issues surrounding elections with the interim government.
A statement issued by the office of President Alvi said that a meeting was held at the Aiwan-e-Sadar on Monday between President Alvi and the Caretaker Federal Law and Justice Minister Ahmed Irfan Aslam.
The statement said, "issues related to the holding of General Elections in the country were discussed."
It added that President Alvi appreciated the statement issued by Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar that the interim government will abide by the judgements of the Supreme Court of Pakistan on the issue of elections.
The statement quoted the President as saying: "Decisions should be taken in accordance with the Spirit of the Constitution."
Alvi further emphasised the need for upholding the supremacy of the Constitution.
President Alvi has been frustrated by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) of late.
Last month, Alvi had invited the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja to hold talks to mutually decide a date for elections.
However, Raja rebuffed the President's invitation, deeming it of "scant consequence" since amendments to the law do not require the commission to consult the President on a date for the elections anymore.
Alvi, however, has communicated that the Constitution continues to supersede any law created under it and that the Constitution empowers him to unilaterally announce the date for general elections.
