Former British parliamentarian of Pakistani origin Lord Nazir Ahmed has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison after he was convicted earlier this month of sexually abusing two children.

Presiding over the hearing, Mr Justice Lavender told the court that the former peer's crimes had  "profound and lifelong effects" on the victims.

In an interview with the BBC, the female victim said, "He is a paedophile who has no personal shame. But in the end, all tyrants fall."

This is not about revenge, this is about justice," said a statement from the second victim.

In January, the 64-year old Lord Nazir was found guilty of the sexual assault of a boy and attempted rape of a young girl.  The sexual abuse occurred in the 1970s when the former MP was himself a teenager.

Although he previously denied the allegations as ‘malicious fiction,’ the male victim wrote in an email presented to the jury, “I have evidence against that paedophile.”

The prosecution relayed in court that in 1973 and 1974, when Nazir Ahmed was 16 or 17 years old, he repeatedly attempted to rape a much younger girl.  He had also assaulted a boy under the age of 11 in 1972. The abuse occurred in Rotherham, UK.

Lord Ahmed’s brothers, Mohammed Farouq, aged 70, and Mohammed Tariq, aged 65, were also accused of indecent assault against the same boy, but were deemed unfit to stand trial.

Lord Nazir Ahmed resigned from his seat in the House of Lords in November 2020 after a conduct committee found that he had sexually and emotionally abused a female constituent seeking his assistance in a separate incident.
