The latest terrorism incident in the northwest region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) claimed the lives of at least eight people, five of whom were teachers. Kurram is a tribal district bordering Afghanistan, and is home to the ethnic Shi'a Turi and Bangash tribes, who have long been targeted by the conservative Sunni militant groups of the area.

According to local police, in the first incident in Parachinar, a teacher was killed while riding in a moving vehicle on Shalozan Road.

Separately, four teachers were among seven people shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the Government High School Tari Mangal staff room. All of the teachers were present at the building to perform their exam-related duties.

The three other killed were drivers who used to deliver building supplies to the school. Gruesome images of the dead bodies were circulating on social media after the incident.

All local hospitals in Parachinar are now operating under emergency conditions as a result of the shootings.

According to the authorities, the teacher, Mohammad Sharif, who died inside the moving vehicle on Shalozan Road, also belonged to same institution.

The authorities stated that the deceased's bodies were sent to their ancestral villages for burial.

The ongoing matriculation exams, which began on April 28 and are being managed by the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) Kohat, have been postponed till further notice as a result of the incidents. Moreover, all educational institutions were closed as well.

The killers are being hunted by the police, but they yet to be identified or found. No proscribed organization has so far claimed responsibility for these heinous attacks.

In the meantime, locals demonstrated against the killings in front of the local press club.

While condemning the incident, President Arif Alvi said that the killing of teachers by the enemies of education is condemnable.
