Journalist Azaz Syed said on Wednesday that any move on part of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan to undertake a long march to influence the appointment of the incoming chief of army staff (COAS) in line with speculation would prove unacceptable to both: the governing coalition and the military.

He made the comments in flagship Naya Daur TV show Khabar Say Aagay. Khan may however, Syed said, devote all his energy towards discrediting the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and obtain some relief from the Supreme Court.

He termed the government's decision to hand over the federal capital's security to the military symbolic. While Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi will not obstruct Imran's long march, he will not actively back it either, Syed said.

Questioned on whether the party would be in a position to holding the federal capital hostage, Syed said a great deal of water had flowed under the bridge since 2014. The ISI DG is not supporting Khan this time with the blessings of the army chief.
COAS Bajwa will not accept an extension, Syed said. The chapter was effectively closed, he added.

Analyst Muzamal Suharwardy asked what else was COAS Bajwa expected to say other than that he will retire over his tour of the United States. He had to say so, Suharwardy said. The government, however, will urge him to continue.

Flagship Naya Daur TV show Khabar Say Aagay streams Monday to Saturday at 9pm.
