A vintage photograph of the Hanna Lake near Quetta, taken not too long after the reservoir was made by the British in 1894.

Originally built as a dam for irrigation, the lake is one of the most wonderful picnic spots in the country, and has recently become a water sports resort. Situated on the edge of the Urak valley, the lake is filled with water from streams coming down the Zarghoon and Murdar mountains. The turquoise water stands out in an otherwise dry brown landscape.

In 1976, some of these water channels were destroyed in a flood. The inflow of water began to decrease, and by the year 2000, the lake had completely dried up. Although it was filled up again, locals fear it may dry up again because key water channels had not been restored.
