The KP police chief, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Akhtar Hayat Khan Gandapur, said his force arrested the two terrorists, who had escaped after an encounter with police in Banjot area of Swat on May 23.
Addressing a press conference, KP police chief Akhtar Hayat Khan said that terrorist Rafiullah alias Jawad, and his facilitator Asmatullah, both absconded after an engagement with the police in Banjot area. One police constable was injured and a local was wounded during the May 23 clash.
IGP Akhtar Hayat Khan further said that every year a nefarious effort was made to sabotage the tourist season in Swat "from a neighbouring country" and similar attempts were also made this year from Bajaur and Dir tribal districts.
IGP KP added that the apprehended facilitator had hidden the weapons after concealed the terrorists, from which hand grenades, jackets and bomb-making materials and other sophisticated weapons have also been recovered after the operation, another terrorist Zakirullah has escaped and the search for his arrest is going on.
The IGP said that the arrested terrorists had come from Afghanistan last year, and had also received formal training in Afghanistan in 2012. These terrorists were also suspected to be involved in extortion and target killing in Swat.
IGP Akhtar Hayat Khan affirmed that the peace of Malakand Division will not be allowed to deteriorate again, and "effective intelligence based operations" are underway against the terrorists.
IGP KP visits Swat Police Lines
Earlier, IGP KP Akhtar Hayat Khan addressed a darbar of officers and jawans of Malakand region at the Swat Police Lines. A large number of officers and men of all ranks, hailing from different units and departments of the KP police force, participated in the darbar.
The police chief said that every officer and jawan of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police had performed their duties beyond expectations, despite all kinds of adverse circumstances during the last two decades. "Officers and jawans of every rank have restored peace by sacrificing their precious lives," IG KP said.
The IGP further said that Swat's economy was linked to tourism, and every year millions of tourists come from every corner of the country to Swat, Dir and Chitral during the summer season. The livelihood of locals is linked with tourism. IGP KP appreciated tourism policing and urged the participants present at the darbar to treat the people well, especially the tourists.
IGP Akhtar Hayat Khan promised that he would solve the problem of police personnel's promotions by by July 15th. The IGP said that as the commander of the police force, the welfare and well-being of the police force was his first priority.
The dowry of the first daughter of the police official has been increased from Rs 30 thousand to Rs 100 thousand, along with the increase in the monthly stipend and burial charges. Rs 100-300 thousand will be given to police officials for their parents and children. All the problems related to the employment of youths in the tribal police have been resolved, as per the IG, while additional measures were being taken for the welfare of the employees of the force.
The IGP said that the police force was "like a family" and that all available means will be used to build it. In the darbar or police court, officers and young men presented individual and social issues related to their service. After listening carefully to all the proposals, the IGP issued orders on the site to resolve them. The IGP also planted saplings along the lines of the Swat.
