The Supreme Court's decision restoring the National Assembly and declaring the deputy speaker's ruling unconstitutional has been widely celebrated by lawyers, journalists as well as civil society activists.

The Supreme Court on Thursday set aside the deputy speaker's ruling rejecting the no-confidence motion against Imran Khan as well as President Arif Alvi's decision to dissolve the National Assembly.

The court said that the ruling as well as the dissolution of the assembly was 'contrary to the Constitution and the law and of no legal effect'.

Observers including journalists, lawyers and activists rejoiced that the doctrine of necessity was buried by the Supreme Court.

Talking to Friday Times, senior lawyer Hina Jilani said that the apex court righted a wrong through today's judgement and that it was a victory of rule of law and the constitution.

He said that if immediate elections had been announced, it would have resolved the crisis in the country.
