A First Information Report (FIR) against religious scholar Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza under Section 16 of the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance (MPO) has been lodged on Friday.
The FIR was lodged on the complaint of the general secretary of International Ahle Sunat Organisation, Humair Ali Qadri.
According to the FIR, the complainant quoted a few statements of Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza, stressing that he had committed blasphemy; therefore, a case of blasphemy under Article 295 C should be filed against him.
The FIR claims that the Islamic scholar’s statements have caused uproar among Muslims, due to which terrorism charges should also be included in the FIR.
The complainant alleged that Muhammad Ali Mirza had uttered blasphemous words for the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), disrespected the Holy Quran, and attempted to declare Ahmadis as Muslims on the condition that they stop calling Muslims infidels.
It must be mentioned here that the Engineer has repeatedly clarified his stance on the issue of the apostatisation of Ahmadis. He believes that the ‘sect’ doesn’t belong to Islam.
The police have filed a case under Section 16 of the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance.
Engineer Muhammad Ali Mirza is a well-known Islamic scholar with a huge following within and outside the country.
It is pertinent to mention here that blasphemy law is often used in the country to settle personal scores. In many cases, the accused were murdered in police custody or before reaching the stage of trial.
Human rights organizations and civil society have for years highlighted the misuse of the blasphemy laws and call for amending the laws.
