His body had been kept at the morgue of the Guru Gobind Singh Government General (GG) Hospital, where it had been taken for forensic post-mortem after his death. Last week, police authorities finally allowed volunteers to proceed with the burial of his body.
The deceased Imran Kamran had been arrested in 2009, with Indian authorities alleging that he had crossed the border illegally.
Both India and Pakistan have detained citizens of the other country on various charges, including those of entry into their territory without permission. In January 2021, both countries performed a reciprocal exchange of information about prisoners that they held in this context. Indian authorities informed the Pakistan High Commission that they held 340 Pakistani prisoners, including 263 civilians and 77 fishermen. Meanwhile, Pakistan handed over a list of 319 Indian prisoners including 49 civilians and 270 fishermen who were in its custody at that point in time.
