Rawalpindi police on Tuesday arrested former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan in a case of attacking the military's headquarters on May 9, 2023.

Rawalpindi police have previously arrested former foreign minister and PTI Senior Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi in the case.

Imran was arrested after an anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi heard 12 cases relating to the May 9 attacks on Tuesday.

During proceedings, Imran Khan appeared from Adiala Jail via video link after jail officials were excused from presenting him physically before the court. SHOs of police stations where the 12 cases were registered appeared with the complete records of the cases.

RA Bazaar Police Station chief requested the court to grant them physical custody of Imran Khan for further investigations into the case. He also informed the court about the arrest of Imran Khan in the case.

ATC Judge Malik Aijaz directed that all investigations from Imran Khan, in cases relating to May 9 in which he is wanted, should be completed inside Adiala Jail.

The arrest and request for physical remand came after a special court trying Imran Khan in the cipher case registered under the Official Secrets Act approved his release after the Supreme Court had approved his bail. The order, issued by Judge Abdul Hasnaat Zulqarnain, had added that Imran should be released unless he is wanted in another case.

It is pertinent to mention here that Imran Khan was being detained in the £190 million case and the Toshakhana Case apart from the cipher case.

Earlier, the Rawalpindi police had arrested Shah Mehmood Qureshi just as he exited Adiala Jail after being granted bail in the cipher case.

Imran Khan had been arrested from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) compound in the Al Qadir Trust case by the paramilitary Rangers, which sparked nationwide protests which turned violent, culminating in attacks on state institutions, including military facilities such as the GHQ.
