This development came after the MQM-P shortlisted and sent PM Shehbaz a list of five names for the position of the governor of Sindh. If the appointment of Nasreen Jalil is approved by the president, it will make her Pakistan’s third female governor.
Nasreen Jalil is a longtime member of the MQM-P; having joined the party in 1988. She is now the deputy convener for the party as well. She got elected to the Senate in 1994, and was one of only two women in a House of 87.
During the time, Jalil was also a chairperson on the Functional Committee on Human Rights, as well as the Senate's Standing Committee on Finance, Revenue, Economic Affairs, Statistics, P&D and Privatization.
She became a prisoner of conscience in 1994, and was jailed for 6 months in Karachi Jail, following which she also remained under house arrest till 1997. She was arrested again in 1999 for protesting and leading demonstrations against the construction of Kala Bagh Dam.
In 2002, she contested the General Elections, and lost. However in 2006, she was elected to the City Council Karachi and became the Naib Nazim, or deputy mayor of Karachi. Most recently, she was elected as a chairperson of the City Council Karachi in 2010.
