Two adolescent sisters were detained in Gujranwala, Punjab, on Wednesday for allegedly setting fire to their father in retaliation for rape.
The father was attacked on January 1 and sent to a hospital, where he died on Tuesday.
"The girls said that they decided amongst themselves to find a 'permanent solution'," Rizwan Tariq, a senior police officer in the city, told AFP. They then stole petrol off a motorcycle and set fire to their father as he slept, he said. The step-sisters said their father had raped the eldest daughter for a year and attempted to rape the younger girl twice.
Their mothers, both married to the man, were aware of the abuse but unaware of the retribution plan. One of the spouses has also been detained, while the second is being questioned.
"We expect to present them before the court in a few days, as soon as we finish the investigation," Tariq told reporters. The man, Ali Akbar, died at the hospital after sustaining serious burns.
According to authorities, FIR has been filed under Sections 302, 324, and 34 of the Criminal Procedure Code, and both females, ages 16 and 12, have been arrested. Akbar, who had three marriages and ten children, lived in a rented house with his two wives and children, and his first wife has been reported to have died.
The victim's two wives are named as suspects in the first information report (FIR). According to the victim's sister's accusation, one of the suspects was Akbar's third wife's daughter from her previous marriage, while the other was his second wife's daughter.
In the FIR, the complainant claimed that Akbar's two wives and daughters, as well as unknown others, used sedatives to put the victim to sleep before setting him on fire as part of a premeditated strategy.
In their police statement, the girls admitted to tying up their father while he was sleeping and lighting him on fire with fuel removed from a motorbike.
