A truck carrying pilgrims to the Shah Noorani shrine plunged into a ditch in the Hub area of Balochistan, resulting in at least 17 fatalities and over 30 injuries.
The truck driver, Karim Baksh, who sustained injuries in the incident, has been placed under arrest, according to Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Sakro Wajid Ali. The police officer said that a turn made by the driver caused the crash.
"More than 70 people had left for the pilgrimage from Makli's Qasim Jokhio village," the police officer said in a conversation with the media outside the Edhi morgue in Karachi's Sohrab Goth.
He said that at least 15 of the 17 people who passed away had been identified.
Rescue sources said that a total of 17 people have been recognized as deceased and 38 as wounded.
The victim's family members denied claims that the incident happened as a result of a driving race, stating that it actually happened when the truck lost control while making a corner.
"Passengers kept falling from the truck, which resulted in deaths," they said.
According to the family, 49 injured persons are receiving treatment at the Civil Hospital, and at least 17 people have perished in the tragedy.
Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti also took notice of the incident and directed the district administration to speedily bring the injured to hospitals.
