LHC Reserves Verdict On Plea Against Sections Of Local Bodies Act

Lahore High Court (LHC) has reserved a verdict on a plea seeking the declaration of more than 20 sections of the Local Bodies Act 2021–22 as null and void.

LHC Justice Shujat Ali Khan heard the case filed by former Lahore Mayor Colonel (retired) Mubashir Javed.

During the hearing, the Punjab additional advocate general raised objections to the plea and stated that the plea had been filed before time as elections had not been conducted as per the aforementioned Act.

The petitioner’s lawyer argued that the law has been made and that it indicates that elections will be held according to that; therefore, the plea is not submitted before time.

As per the act, activists of political parties are allowed to contest elections, whereas a common citizen cannot contest polls, the lawyer said.

The lawyer said that financial responsibilities have been transferred to the administration as per the Local Government Act. The elected governments have been dissolved, and the schedule for fresh elections is not being announced, he added. He mentioned that the district officers are running the affairs of the local bodies.
