President Dr Arif Alvi  has urged politicians to refrain from making the Pakistan Army "controversial".

Talking to journalists at the Governor House in Lahore, the President said that he has been telling politicians to refrain from bringing the army under discussion.

He said that the armed forces are responsible for the country’s security and they should be respected.

Talking about the ongoing political crisis, President Alvi said that the situation is not ideal and it is vital for political parties to hold talks and chalk out a way forward.

“If I don't see the situation getting better, I will ask them to sit at a negotiation table. As the president, I can only ask, not order," he said.

He said that he has a cordial relationship with the government, adding that he is ready to mediate between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and PTI chairperson Imran Khan in order to make the environment feasible for early polls.

It is pertinent to mention that the Islamabad police had arrested PTI leader Shahbaz Gill on Tuesday for delivering statements against state institutions and inciting the people to rebellion. An FIR was registered against him at Kohsar Police Station under several sections of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) including 124-A, 131, 153, 153-A, 505, and 506.

“This is an abduction not an arrest. Can such shameful acts take place in any democracy? Political workers treated as enemies. And all to make us accept a foreign backed government of crooks,” Imran had tweeted following Gill’s arrest.
