Fact Check: Did UN Chief António Guterres Tweet Against Pakistani Authorities?

A screenshot of a tweet allegedly by United Nations Secretary General António Guterres saying that the Pakistani authorities 'did not care' about their people has been proven to be fake.

A tweet from a fake account of António Guterres had been making the rounds on Twitter. As per the fake tweet, the UN chief allegedly said, "I am surprised that on the visit to Pakistan, the Prime Minister of Pakistan wanted me to have a media talk of his choice. I saw there that the Pakistani authorities do not care about the people."



The tweet, which garnered over 15,800 likes, was proven to be from a fake account with the Twitter handle @AntonioGutress. The real account is @AntonioGuterres, and has posted no such tweet.



Since then, the fake account posing to be António Guterres has been suspended.

The UN chief was in Pakistan on September 9 for a two-day visit of the flood-hit areas. “I appeal for massive support from the international community as Pakistan responds to this climate catastrophe,” he said upon his arrival.
