Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial has met former Attorney General Salman Aslam Butt – a lawyer considered close to the Sharif family, journalist Imran Waseem claimed on Saturday.
In a series of tweets, Waseem quoted his sources as saying that the two met a day earlier at CJ Bandial's chamber.
He further said that when a reporter asked Butt about the reasons behind the meeting, the ex-AGP said that the top judge had conveyed, once or twice, to him that to have a meeting with him.
Butt then reportedly said that he went to meet the Chief Justice since he was on a visit to Islamabad.
He also told the reporter that he wasn't well so CJ Bandial inquired him about his health, and went on to add that he hadn't been asked to make the visit, but he did so on his own.
According to Waseem, Butt has served as the Attorney General during the Nawaz Sharif regime, and has close ties with the Sharif brothers.
The development comes at a time when the judiciary and the government are at a deadlock regarding the elections in Punjab, scheduled for May 14.
The Supreme Court had annulled the ECP's decision to postpone the polls to October 8, inviting a swift rebuke from the government.
The ruling party is of he stance that the elections must take place simultaneously, in view of the current crises on the economic front and the new wave of terrorism.
The court's decision won praise by the PTI, which wants the polls to be held in May, at all costs. As per their stance, the coalition government wants to avoid elections because it sees an imminent defeat.
The Constitution binds the authorities to hold polls within 90 days of dissolution of the assembly. The government has yet to release Rs21 billion for the electoral activity to take place.
