Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb has announced that the federal cabinet has formed a committee to deliberate whether treason proceedings under Article 6 should be initiated against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s top leadership, including the party’s chairperson Imran Khan.

Earlier on Thursday, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah announced that the government has started preparations to file cases under Article 6 against the PTI leaders in light of the Supreme Court’s detailed verdict on former National Assembly deputy speaker Qasim Khan Suri’s April 3 ruling.

In its verdict issued on Wednesday, the apex court said that Suri’s April 3 ruling, which had dismissed then opposition’s no-confidence motion against Imran Khan, failed to qualify for protection of the internal proceedings of parliament under Article 69(1) as it was “not the outcome of a vote in the assembly instead, it was a unilateral decision”.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad today, Marriyum said that a special committee has been formed under the leadership of Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, which will present its suggestions in the next federal cabinet meeting.

She said that the committee would present a report on the implementation of the points put forward by the top court and suggest an inquiry under Article 6 and other laws to prevent constitutional violations from occurring in the future.

"The cabinet committee will suggest measures that can be taken against Imran Khan and his government for violating the Constitution and present a report in the next meeting," she said.
