Pakistani police failed to arrest Imran Khan, former prime minister and chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Islamabad police arrived at Khan's Zaman Park residence yesterday (Tuesday) but faced stiff opposition from Khan's supporters and fans who have been camping outside Khan's house for weeks.

According to latest reports, police action to arrest Imran Khan was still ongoing as of the filing of this report. PTI workers threw rocks at police vehicles and policemen, at which the police responded with tear gas shells. This exchange has continued for well over 18 hours.

The Punjab caretaker government met in an emergency session in the early hours of Wednesday (today) to reiterate their resolve that they will arrest Khan to fulfill court orders. Punjab caretaker chief minister Mohsin Naqvi has declared his support for policemen who were injured in attacks by PTI supporters, but sources claim that the caretaker government as well as Punjab police were hesitant to use 'full force' to prevent any needless death - in reference to the death of PTI supporter Ali Bilal on 8 March.

In the morning hours of Wednesday (today), Imran Khan tweeted that paramilitary Punjab Rangers troops were "taking over" security duties from police stationed outside Zaman Park, and claimed that his supporters had earlier faced live ammunition as well as rubber bullets.

In his tweets, Khan lamented the military establishment's "neutrality" and called the incumbent PDM government "crooks trying to abduct and possibly murder him".
