Salman Rushdie, the controversial author who was attacked on Friday, is topping bestseller charts.
Rushdie's book The Satanic Verses, deemed blasphemous by many, is retailing at the top spot across global e-commerce giant Amazon's contemporary literature and fiction category.

The corporation, it appears, is struggling to meet demand with the book listed as "temporarily out-of-stock" at the time of the filing of this report.

The publication of the book was met with widespread outrage across much of the Muslim world. It invited a fatwa from now-deceased Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khomeini. A three million dollar bounty was also placed on the author's head.

The backlash forced Rushdie underground with the divisive novel banned across India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Singapore and Malaysia among other countries.

Rushdie, who is a Booker Prize winner, has also penned Midnight's Children, Shame and The Moor's Last Sigh.

He was attacked on Friday in New York as he readied to deliver a lecture. The author was airlifted to a hospital after. He is said to be recovering.
