Petroleum Price Hike Fuels Condemnation From Opposition

Opposition members have blasted the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government for raising the price of petroleum products, saying that this hike will worsen the economic hardships many families across Pakistan already face.

Last night, the PTI government raised the price of petroleum products from Rs.10 to Rs.12 per litre, the highest-ever price in the country's history, for the next week and a half until February 28. PTI also announced the application of an International Monetary Fund (IMF) commitment to a petroleum levy.

Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Senator Sherry Rehman took to Twitter on Wednesday to state "Petrol is going to become unaffordable in Pakistan [...] The wheels of this country are coming to a grinding halt."

Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader Ishaq Dar attributed the price hike to the Pakistan Rupee's devaluation which has 'landed Pakistan with unaffordable prices per litre.'

PPP MNA Nafisa Shah called the increased prices 'cruel to say the least',  adding that the  devaluation of the rupee and the increase in petrol prices has 'made it worse' for the people. "How on earth will they make ends meet," she asked.

PPP's Media Cell quoted PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto in a series of Twitter posts as saying, "Rising prices of petroleum products is a robbery on people's pockets."

PML-N Sindh General Secretary Miftah Ismail questioned: "What happened to the IK who was going to crack down on money laundering, do tax reforms, collect more taxes, reduce expenditures, reduce debt, end protocol, end SOE losses, control prices, provide justice, improve schools, create jobs, build houses and reduce petrol prices?"
