On the 10th of January 1966 Pakistan and India signed the famous Tashkent treaty in the Soviet Union, ending the September 1965 war between the two. The Soviets, represented by Premier Alexei Kosygin, moderated between Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri and Pakistani President Muhammad Ayub Khan. On the 11th of January, Shastri died in mysterious circumstances. This picture shows his coffin being carried to Tashkent airport. Soviet Premier Kosygin (on the right) and Ayub shoulder it. Kosygin and Ayub Khan were said to be good friends. India still classifies the death as “mysterious and unexplained”.
