Erdogan’s ire


According to Daily Jang (23 October 2017), Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan is of the view that civilisation/culture (tehzeeb) had not even passed anywhere close to the United States. The report further quoted him as saying that this was the case even though the US considered itself to be a cradle of democracy.


Crackdown on unspecified fahashi


Daily Jang (23 October 2017) reported that police in Lahore raided a location in Johar Town, arresting 4 females (larkiaan) and 5 males (mard) for obscene acts (fuhsh harkaat).


Requiescat in pace


The PPP’s Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, according to Daily Jang (23 October 2017) stated that between them, Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan had taken Pakistani politics to its funeral (janaaza nikaal diya hai).


Volunteer fine-collector?


A fake traffic warden was apprehended in Lahore, having ‘fined’ numerous citizens without any authorization whatsoever, according to Daily Jang (24 October 2017).

According to Daily Dunya (29 October 2017), Maryam Nawaz addressed speculation of a rift in the Sharif family by stating that Shahbaz Sharif was her hero.


Landa woes


Daily Dunya (29 October 2017) reported that even in the flea market (landa bazaar), clothing and other items had seen price rises of 50-60 percent. According to the report, well-off people were now headed to the Landa, since they saw little difference between the prices there and those at regular markets.


Parliamentary proceedings


It was reported in Daily Jang (24 October 2017) that the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provincial assembly erupted in rival chants of “Sharam karo, sharam!” (Shame, Shame!) and “Mujhe kyoon nikala?” (Why was I removed?) – the former from the opposition members in the assembly and the latter from members of the governing PTI. The report further stated that it became difficult to restore order to the session.


Imran Khan on accountability


PTI chief Imran Khan was quoted by Daily Dunya (28 October 2017) as saying that there was a “VIP Accountability” (VIP ehtesab) in the country: the smaller thief has to go to jail and the bigger bandit (daaku) gets a 40-vehicle procession as protocol. He emphasized that such a system had to be changed, and expressed his view that the biggest bandits were Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari.


Unwilling volunteers?


It was reported by Daily Express (25 October 2017) that members of the Khwaja Serah community refused to assist the traffic police with raising awareness of traffic rules at road signals until they were paid for their efforts. The report also quoted members of the community as saying that traffic officials resorted to violence against them if they begged on the street.


Rana Sanaullah’s theory


Rana Sanaullah was quoted by Daily Express (24 October 2017) as saying that the custodians at the Sehwan Sharif shrine did not allow Imran Khan entry because they had found out about Ayesha Gullalai’s accusations.
