Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) leader Raja Riaz has accused former Rawalpindi Commissioner Liaqat Chatha of getting hundreds of millions of rupees and a New York apartment from overseas Pakistanis. Former opposition leader Riaz said at a press conference in Faisalabad on Monday that Pakistanis living overseas bought Chatha for Rs250 million and gave her a property in New York.
"I'd want to tell you about his background. He worked in Faisalabad for 20 years and was the most corrupt magistrate. He falsely accused the chief election commissioner and chief justice of corruption after receiving money near his retirement," he claimed.
The PML-N leader further asked the authorities concerned to add the former commissioner's name to the Exit Control List (ECL) and conduct an investigation into his accusations.
"Liaqat Chatha's name should be added to the ECL, and an investigation should be initiated. Usman Buzdar gave Chatha his last posting for Rs50 million," he said. He claimed that the PTI attempted to replicate the May 9 riots the previous day but failed.
On Saturday, in a dramatic occurrence, Commissioner Rawalpindi Division Liaqat Chatha submitted his resignation, citing "guilty conscience" for abetting large-scale electoral cheating in Rawalpindi, escalating the political temperature in the country.
