Mansoor Usman Awan – the lawyer who was recently appointed as the new Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) – has recused himself from the role.
As per media reports, Awan conveyed to the federal government that he wasn't in the position at present to serve the post.
In Dec last year, President Arif Alvi approved the summary of the AGP's appointment, but a notification in this regard wasn't released, owing to the reservations of a section of the judiciary, according to a report.
The young lawyer came to prominence while representing the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) during a presidential reference interpreting the Article 63A of the Constitution on defection.
Awan has a Master's degree in the discipline of law from Harvard Law School. He received the Dean's Award for Leadership and served as the president of the Harvard Graduate Council during 2004-05.
He completed his Bachelor of Laws from Punjab University in 2002 and earned a gold medal for a first position in jurisprudence and criminal law.
It is yet to be seen as to how the government would attempt to fill the vacant slot at its earliest.
In the same month, Dr Syed Tauqir, who had retired as the principal secretary to the prime minister, was reappointed.
A grade 22 officer, Dr Tauqir was reappointed with effect from Dec 25, for a period of one year.
Considered an experienced bureaucrat, he was first appointed after the PTI chairman's ouster from via a vote of confidence of the Parliament.
