MNA Rohail Asghar regularly wears the dhoti and is known to prefer it. During a visit to Islamabad club, he was told he cannot enter due to wearing a dhoti.

This has ignited a debate as the club claims they have a dress code and therefore they have to uphold the rules. On the other hand, the dhoti which is very much a marker of Punjab's cultural identity and therefore a part of Pakistan's identity should be seen as acceptable.

The club is seen as a mark of colonial history and is not a private club which means it cannot view a Punjabi item of clothing as a 'lesser' item of clothing.
