A judicial magistrate in Karachi has accepted a petition which asked for autopsy of the late media personality Aamir Liaquat Hussain. The petitioner had argued that the televangelist’s sudden demise earlier this month was in suspicious circumstances, and suggested that he may have been killed over a property dispute. In this context, the petition called upon the court to set up a board that would exhume the body of Aamir Liaquat Hussain and conduct an autopsy to establish the cause of his death.

In response to the petition, the Karachi (east) judicial magistrate said:

“The court has reached a decision that it is inevitable to conduct the post-mortem to disperse the confusion surrounding the death."

The court noted that the family of the late media personality had expressed their opposition to such an autopsy. After his death, it was family members who had asked police to set aside plans for a postmortem, so as not to delay his funeral. At that time, the police surgeon had concluded that the cause of death could not be ascertained from simply an external examination of the body.

Now the secretary of health has been tasked by the court to set up a medical board which will fix a date for the post-mortem examination of Aamir Liaquat Hussain’s body. The Karachi police have responded, assuring that they will facilitate the process. According to Karachi’s police chief, the post-mortem had earlier not been conducted due to the family’s wishes.
