The land of Balochistan, known for its stark beauty and vibrant culture, has recently been shrouded in mourning following the passing of a legendary figure. Mubarak Qazi, a renowned revolutionary poet, breathed his last on the night of 16 September 2023, in Turbat, Balochistan. As his soul embarked on its eternal journey, the people of Balochistan and the worldwide Baloch diaspora joined hands in an outpouring of grief and heartfelt tributes.

Mubarak Qazi, celebrated as a luminary in Balochi literature, found his final resting place amidst hundreds of mourners in his native town of Pasni. His legacy as a writer and revolutionary poet, capturing the spirit of Balochistan, continues to reverberate throughout the region.

Born on 24 December 1956, in the picturesque region of Makran, Mubarak Qazi emerged from humble beginnings in the household of Kahuda Amanullah. He began his educational journey at Pasni High School, a chapter that laid the foundation for his intellectual and artistic pursuits. His thirst for knowledge led him to Sindh Muslim College (SM College) in Karachi, where he embarked on higher studies. However, financial constraints disrupted his academic path, compelling him to return to his hometown to support his family's business.

The resilient poet's determination remained unswayed, and in 1978, he made a triumphant return to Karachi, obtaining a BA degree from Urdu Arts College. His insatiable quest for knowledge led him to the University of Balochistan in Quetta, where he earned an MA and a degree in International Relations (IR).

Mubarak Qazi's poetry transcended the boundaries of ink and paper, it became a potent weapon against oppression and exploitation in Balochistan. He was not merely a poet, he was a resolute voice of resistance and love. His words, steeped in the essence of Baloch culture, ignited passion among the Baloch people. News of his passing reverberated across social media platforms on the morning of 16 September, prompting an immediate outpouring of grief. Admirers and supporters changed their profile pictures to honour the poet and commemorate his profound impact on Baloch culture.

On 16 September in Pasni, the town known as the land of art and artists, the bustling business centres came to a standstill. It seemed as though the collective heartbeat of the town had slowed, and tears welled up in almost every eye. Mubarak Qazi had etched his name into the very soul of his beloved hometown.

The sorrow felt at Mubarak Qazi's passing extends far beyond Pasni. His influence resonates throughout Makuran, Balochistan, and among the Baloch diaspora scattered across the globe. His funeral prayers were conducted in various cities, including Karachi and Dera Ismail Khan. In many cities of Balochistan like Quetta, Turbat and Khuzdar, candles were lit in his memory, casting a gentle glow on his contributions to Balochi literature.

Mubarak Qazi has left behind a rich legacy, a chapter of resistance and revolution that will forever inspire the Baloch nation. He has undoubtedly become an indelible figure in Balochi language and literature, a beacon of hope, and a source of pride for Balochistan.
