Following reports of an illegal slaughterhouse in Karachi allegedly selling donkey meat, a police investigation has found that the butchers were handling beef, and not donkey meat as originally suspected.

A video of the raid, showing several donkeys standing by, as butchers chop cuts of meat, had gone viral on social media — with residents and users on social media speculating on the type of meat being sold.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) West Karachi Nasir Aftab confirmed that the meat had undergone laboratory testing, and was found to be beef, not donkey meat.

In the video, shot at night, nearly a dozen donkeys can be seen tied on leads, as around them butchers cut up unidentifiable scraps of meat.  Several cow carcasses were also found in the surrounding area. The raid occurred in 4K Chowrangi, with some reports indicating that the butchers were found operating in an empty wedding marquee.

Seven donkeys were rescued and rehomed in an animal sanctuary, while the butchers were taken into police custody.

Upon further investigation, the butchers claimed they were supplying cuts of cow meat for a wedding event at a marriage hall nearby.  They said that the donkeys were theirs, but not being slaughtered.

Police corroborated the butchers' claims and left the butchers with a warning not to tie up their donkeys near to where they work.
