On social media, a horrifying video of two women in India's state Manipur being paraded naked on a road by a gang of men has gone viral, sparking outrage and calls for action. A tribal group says that the two women were subjected to multiple gang rapes in a field.

According to a statement by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF), the incident took place on May 4 in the Kangpokpi area, around 35 kilometers from the state capital Imphal.

According to the police, the incident took place in a different district; however, the first information report (FIR) was filed in Kangpokpi.

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh said the police are to look into this situation as quickly as possible. Minister for Women's and Children's Development Irani talked with Singh and the chief secretary about the terrible occurrence. According to Singh, she has been told that swift action will be taken against the criminals.

Conflicts between the Meitei, a valley-majority tribe, and the Kuki tribe, a hill-majority tribe, in Manipur, broke out the day before this on-camera tragedy occurred over the Meiteis' quest for Scheduled Tribes (ST) classification.

The ITLF stated in its statement, "The despicable scene, which happened on May 4 in Kangpokpi district, shows the men constantly molesting the helpless women, who cry and plead with their captors."

The ITLF urged the National Commission for Women and the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes to intervene, saying that the perpetrators' choice to post the video, which reveals the victims' identities, on social media had only served to magnify the horrifying ordeal endured by these defenseless women.

The Manipur Police said today that they had lodged a gang rape and murder case.

A senior police official said, "We have identified the men and will have them in custody shortly." According to the officer, the survivors approached the police about 15 days after the horrifying experience they underwent on May 4. "We have leads. In a day or two, we will capture the culprits," he added.
