Federal Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid has said that the government wants to maintain a normal situation in the capital, and so it prefers to resolve issues by talking to Maulana Abdul Aziz of Lal Masjid. The Interior Minister noted that the Maulana seems to have a problem every other day.

According to Sheikh Rashid,
“Every day, he has an issue, and every day, we try to resolve it.” He went on to emphasize that despite the 511 madrassahs and many mosques in the federal capital, there were problems with one one.

“Out of these 511, we only have issues with one, which we resolve through dialogue,” he said.

The Interior Minister also referred to such negotiations with another religious outfit, without naming it. He added: “However, the result was not good.”

In recent days, there have been verbal confrontations between the Lal Masjid cleric and authorities.

Several Taliban flags were spotted on the building of Jamia Hafsa in Islamabad, after which the police and district administration attempted to remove them. Maulana Abdul Aziz and his students resisted this. Videos circulating on social media showed Abdul Aziz arguing with policemen inside Jamia Hafsa and telling them to quit their jobs. “The Pakistan Taliban will teach you all a lesson,” he had warned them. A large number of female students of the seminary were present on the rooftop to prevent police from removing the flags.
