The case in which Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and former human rights minister Shireen Mazari was arrested in Islamabad earlier today, is from 50 years ago, it has emerged. A property case that was registered in 1972 has been used as the reason to arrest the former minister.

Mazari has been arrested for her alleged involvement in a land encroachment case of property in District Rajanpur, filed in 1972 – a 50 year old case. The case in question was reopened during PTI's former chief minister Usman Buzdar's tenure, but investigation was halted as per his orders.

The former minister’s daughter Imaan Mazari tweeted that her mother was beaten by male police officers who then ‘took her away’.

She said that she didn't know anything about the detention, except that the anti-corruption wing had taken her away and termed the abduction a 'kidnapping' as opposed to an arrest, saying, "When someone is arrested, the police inform you on what charge they are being taken away for."

According to senior journalist Hamid Mir, the case against Shireen Mazari was registered on April 11 2022, and he had allegedly told Mazari about this case 'many days ago'.

The journalist claimed that Mazari said she had all the required documents to prove her innocence, but hadn't been contacted by the anti-corruption department yet.

Footage from Shireen Mazari's arrest has surfaced, and contrary to the claims made by her daughter, she is seen being arrested by female police officers. She is also seen putting up a resistance and being verbally abusive towards a police official for apparently trying to confiscate her mobile phone.

The PTI leadership has declared a nationwide protest against the 'illegal detention' of Shireen Mazari, with several leaders publicly speaking out against the arrest on Twitter.

PTI Chairperson Imran Khan condemned the act in a tweet and said that the ‘imported’ government is miscalculated if it thinks it can coerce Shireen Mazari through this display of ‘fascism’.

Khan said that after a meeting of the party's core committee tomorrow, he would announce the dates for his long march to Islamabad.
