PTI chairman Imran Khan said on Wednesday that a new plan to assassinate him "soon" is afoot, accusing the Punjab and Islamabad IGs of being behind it.

"I conveyed to the people about the earlier plans to target me in at least two public gatherings, and now a new plan is afoot," Imran said in a live telecast.

According to the new plan, Punjab and Islamabad IGs, backed by [their] handlers have formed two squads to target me outside the Zaman Park either today or tomorrow, he said.

"To carryout the plan, some people will penetrate in our rally and shoot dead four to five policemen. Next, they will open indiscriminate fire and target people along the lines of the Model Town tragedy."

Eventually, the former premier maintained, they will reach my residence and assassinate me in a Murtaza Bhutto-style murder.

Imran asked the judiciary and Punjab police to take notice of the “conspiracy”. The IGs, he added, have chosen these squads from their respective teams.

He also said that he had been telling his team about the possibility of his assassination. Referring to the Wazirabad attack, he said, “See how they are destroying evidence and the JIT record.”

“I ask, why? Who is so scared and who are the powerful [people behind it]," the PTI chief questioned.

'JIT to probe threats'

Meanwhile, Caretaker Punjab chief minister Mohsin Naqvi announced to form a commission to probe the assassination threats "as alleged by Mr. Imran Khan".

"We want to ensure that such serious allegation be thoroughly investigated. And strict action will be taken either way," Naqvi said on Twitter.

A day earlier, Imran urged the Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial to order a thorough probe into ‘continuous threats’ to his life and the ‘attack’ on his Zaman Park residence. In a letter, he cited a plot to assassinate him and called for adequate steps against it.

On Saturday, Imran's residence was raided by police while he was at Islamabad's Judicial Complex for a hearing in the Toshakhana case.

Imran Khan also claimed in his letter that he repeatedly asked courts for video link capabilities for many court hearings since his “life is in danger.”

The former premier, who was ousted following a no-confidence motion in the Parliament, escaped a shooting during a rally in Wazirabad, Punjab in November last year.
