Residents of Karachi should brace themselves for an unusually rainy monsoon season, as the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) predicts rainfall levels considerably above normal.
The announcement comes amid concerns over the city's drainage infrastructure, which might worsen floods if not addressed effectively.
The PDMA predicts that rainfall in July and August will be up to 100% greater than average. Commissioner Naqvi stressed the need to prepare for these anticipated downpours, stating that all relevant institutions have already been directed to take precautionary steps.
However, one huge worry looms: Karachi's drainage infrastructure. Commissioner Naqvi noted the possibility of serious damage after heavy rains, since around 500 drains throughout the city are now clogged with debris. The PDMA echoed these concerns, warning that a lack of effective drainage solutions could result in catastrophic flooding in low-lying areas.
Residents of Karachi shared these concerns, emphasizing the importance of cleaning the drains before the rains hit. They warned that failure to do so could exacerbate the situation, leading to catastrophic flooding in low-lying areas.
The PDMA underscored the need for immediate and effective action to clean the drains and ensure proper water drainage. Without these preparations, the increased rainfall could result in a major disaster for Karachi's vulnerable areas.
