The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has instructed TV channels to stop airing caresses and hugs in television dramas, describing such material as violation of Islamic teachings and “culture of Pakistani society.”

The full spectrum of scenes which are not to be depicted are described by PEMRA as follows:
“Hugs/caress scenes/extramarital relations, vulgar/bold dressing, bed scenes, and intimacy of married couple are being glamourised in utter disregard to Islamic teachings and culture of Pakistani society.”

The notification further said:
“A considerable stratum of the society believes that dramas are not depicting the true picture of Pakistani society.”

PEMRA has cited the growing number of complaints via the Pakistan Citizen Portal (PCP) and its own complaints system as the reason why this new directive had to be issued.
