In a tweet, the prime minister extended his best wishes and congratulations to the two. "My congratulations and best wishes to the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee-designate Lt. General Sahir Shamshad Mirza and Chief of the Army Staff-designate Lt. General Asim Munir on their appointment."
The prime minister expressed hope that the military will overcome security challenges confronting the nation in a fitting manner under Munir's leadership in a meeting earlier. Sharif further expressed hope that the army will play a pivotal role in eradicating the menace of terrorism under him.
General Munir separately called on President Alvi at the Aiwan-e-Sadr too.
The general was named COAS by Sharif earlier on Thursday. He had long been cited as a prime contender for the top military post. The appointment came after weeks of hype. Alvi had approved a summary on the top army appointments later. He had met Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan in connection with the appointments earlier the same day.
