Imran Khan Holds Govt, State Accountable For Arshad Sharif Killing
Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan has lashed out at the government and the military, holding them responsible for the killing of journalist Arshad Sharif in Kenya earlier on Monday.

Expressing his views on Twitter, the former prime minister said that Arshad Sharif's killing has 'highlighted the targeting' of anyone who dares to criticise or question 'those holding power'. "When will our senior Judiciary act to ensure our citizen's fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution are protected and safeguarded against excesses by the State and government?" he asked.

He continued and said that citizens, politicians, journalists and human rights defenders have been 'intimidated, tortured, arrested and charged with terrorism and incitement to mutiny'. Accusing the government of 'misusing power' and registering 'fake cases' against opponents, he said the senior judiciary was still 'aloof'.

"When will the Judiciary move to act against State institutions that are defying all laws and violating the Constitution?" he asked, adding that it was high time that they did.

Earlier in the day Imran Khan had condemned the killing of Arshad Sharif, maintaining that the slain reporter paid the ‘ultimate price’ for speaking the truth and exposing the powerful.

“He had to leave the country & be in hiding abroad but he continued to speak the truth on social media, exposing the powerful,” he wrote, adding that the entire nation was mourning his death today.

“We have descended into a state of brutality, unknown in civilised society, indulged in by the powerful against those who dare to criticise & expose wrongdoings,” the former prime minister had said.
