The National Assembly Sunday amended a law limiting the disqualification of a parliamentarian to a maximum of five years. This immediately gives two previously disqualified politicians - three time former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and sugar tycoon Jahangir Tareen - a means of returning to politics.

In 2017, both had been disqualified for life after they were found to be "dishonest" under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution.
62. Qualifications for membership of Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament):
(1) A person shall not be qualified to be elected or chosen as a member of Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament) unless-
(f) he is sagacious, righteous and non-profligate, honest and ameen, there being no declaration to the contrary by a court of law

Earlier this month, the Senate approved a bill seeking amendments to Section 232 (Qualifications and Disqualifications) of the Election Act, 2017.
